About my work:
My paintings balance real and imaginary worlds, creating dreamscapes, landscapes, and spiritual states. Spaces of passage, transition, and mutation run throughout my work. I depict animals and nature existing in harmonious ecosystems where everything is interconnected. My paintings contain elaborate environments that are difficult to locate or define, yet remain familiar and comforting. The works appear delicate and serene at first, but upon closer inspection, flora and fauna germinate within my landscapes, intermingling and taking on each other’s characteristics to create fantastical, seemingly off-kilter environments.
These idyllic landscapes reveal unexpected oddities, such as animal faces emerging from leaves and petals. Whole or partial moths, dogs, and local flowers frequently appear throughout my work. Their recognizable forms provide a sense of familiarity within otherwise unfamiliar environments. Sometimes they appear as lost companions, and other times they suggest the continuous cycle of life. My works speak to mystery and to what might exist beyond the boundaries of reality and possibility.
I work primarily on Mylar, a transparent surface that allows me to paint, draw, and silkscreen on both the front and back, creating depth through intricate layers. I explore opacity and translucency, allowing layers of color and form to emerge and contribute to a sense of unreality. My vibrantly colored landscapes are inspired by my everyday surroundings and experiences. I pull from what is around me, mixing, merging, and piecemealing images and forms to find the right composition for each piece.
My work invites the viewer to navigate imagined spaces that lure and entice. I want the work to evoke a sense of freedom, curiosity, and playfulness. Shimmering with energetic lines and color, my spirit-dreamscapes create a space where anything is possible.
Bio:
Cary Hulbert is a New York-based artist, educator, and curator. Hulbert received her MFA from Columbia University in 2016 and her BFA from Montserrat College of Art in 2007. She has taught printmaking and drawing at Columbia University and Mass Art. Currently, Hulbert is a Project Manager and Master Etcher at Two Palms in SoHo NYC.
